WINEMAKER'S NOTES
The Emidio Pepe "Montepulciano D'Abruzzo 'Casa Pepe'" 2021 is named to evoke a sense of home and tradition. "Casa Pepe," meaning "Pepe's House," represents the winery’s familial approach to viticulture. Grapes are handpicked from biodynamically farmed vineyards surrounding the estate. The Montepulciano grapes undergo gentle crushing and are fermented in glass-lined cement tanks using natural yeasts. Extended maceration allows for thorough extraction of color, tannin, and flavor. The wine is aged in cement vats for a minimum of two years and then in bottles to integrate flavors and soften tannins.
STORY
Since 1899, the Pepe family estate, led by Emidio Pepe since 1964, shifted from high-yield grape production to crafting distinguished wines, now spanning 17 hectares. Prioritizing organic and biodynamic methods, Emidio's approach—eschewing modern machinery for traditional winemaking—garnered international acclaim. The estate's prime location between the Adriatic Sea and the Apennine Mountains provides an ideal terroir for Montepulciano and Trebbiano grapes, cultivated with manual harvesting and pergola training. Emidio's commitment to natural processes includes using exclusively cement tanks for aging, ensuring the wine's character remains unaltered by oak, and forbidding sulphites, filtration, and fining, cementing the estate's reputation for pure, traditionally made wines.
